Re YouTube overtaking the BBC, I put this to a senior BBC exec here at the UGTV 07 conference, asking if broadcasters could compete effectively online with pure Internet entities. (NB If YT is overtaking the BBC, the biggest and best funded of the UK's broadcasters, then the rest must be trailing even further behind.)
He conceded that it's been difficult for the BBC to compete online, as Internet projects have often been focused on supporting broadcast TV shows. He sees the need for a part of the BBC's new media effort to be totally free of broadcast. (Unfortunately, it's hard to see this happening for political reasons around funding and controversy around the BBC being too dominant in areas where commercial rivals already feel they're being shut out.)
Even though some players in trad media, such as the Guardian and Telegraph newspapers, here have been embracing more participation, I think they're all in for a rough ride facing up to highly competitive and well-funded mainly US social media services.
