Overall, this does seem like a time where there is increased interest in usability testing. A down economy leads to more rational thinking. I've been dabbling with creating a crowdsourced way to gain independent website feedback for this purpose.
Regardless of how one gathers user feedback, it's something worth doing because it will help decrease bounce rates and increase conversions.

@Ed Kohler, I agree. Usability has never been more important than today in this worsening economy... Websites are finally thinking in terms of what is best for the 'visitor experience'.
