When Twitter Trumps E-mail

Macworld breaks down when it's better to use Twitter over email:

When avoiding junk-mail filters is a priority
When you need a handy universal contact page
When you want to tell friends about the newest dancing baby video
When your group needs a fast way to share

I would add one more - when you actually want to reach someone. I am
finding that the 140 character limit on both sides of the ball can
solicit a faster response than email at times.

We are also hearing that bloggers prefer PR contact via Twitter. Less inbox clutter and more concise pitches.

And they have to opt into a two-way relationship with you that they completely control.

Totally agree. This is the fastest way to communicate now. I've set up two interviews for my company through twitter in the last two days. Also, lunch for Friday. It's the new preferred way to connect.

Steve, you are also trying to tell us that Twitter trumps transparency ;-)

Curious, Steve: What do you think of the recently-released research that suggests Gen-Yers would prefer to give up social channels than email? The study claims that email is resurgent in this group. I commented on this on FIR this morning. Link:http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/gen_y_says_you_can_take_facebook_but_please_dont_take_email.php

If you have a problem with getting marked as spam in someone's inbox, you're probably doing something wrong and trying to reach them on Twitter could end up being a worse idea--since it's out there for world to see.Otherwise, I agree with this.

Shel despite all the hype I still think email has a long life. Social media creates more email not less sez Nielsen - http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/is-social-media-impacting-how-much-we-email/

Of course I actually get my DM messages via email from Twitter so I am not sure how that works into the formula.
